A little bit of history
Skopelos means “rocky”, a good definition for this mountainous island.
The name has changed throughout history, for example it has been called,
in remote times, Peparithos. We do not know who the first inhabitants of
the island were and where they came from, but tradition has it that the
island was first occupied by the Cretans in the Minoan era.
According to mythology, Prince Stafylos son of Ariadne and
Theseus or god Dionysus landed in Skopelos and settled with his people.
Its name means “cluster”, the island in fact is known since ancient times
as a great producer of wine. Many believe that an ancient tomb in the area
of Staphylos belonged to the king.
